Offshore Drilling: Going Deeper – and Some Construction in Indonesia

It seems that the Rigs theme is in focus this week... The new issue of Offshore magazine features a section
“Many of the newer rigs currently under contract, and those still under construction in shipyards around the world, are designed for deeper waters and wells. Nearly 50 of the premium jackups in the global fleet are rated to water depths of 400 ft or greater… The greatest demands are from the greater Asia/Pacific region, the North Sea, and Middle East. Roughly 31 of the 142 rigs highlighted in this year's survey are deployed in Asia Pacific (22% of the total), followed by 28 in the North Sea (20%) and 15 in the Middle East (11%).” writes Ted Moon.
There is a good analysis of current situation with offshore drilling, including this table
Rig orders 2008-2013 (year-to-date)
And 2013 Worldwide MODU construction/new order survey, where there is only one mention of Indonesia:

A few words on Drydocks World – Graha. This is a modern dedicated rig and offshore construction yard with the ability to build jackup or semi-submersible rigs. This flyer describes it good.

This is a Batam facility that is run by Dubai-based company Drydocks World and Maritime World (DWMW). In 2010 the self-propelled jack-up construction vessel, Nora was built for Master Marine ASA of Norway.
In 2011 the Graha plant delivered a Self Elevating Platform, L210 to Curacao based Self Elevating Platforms N.V., with contract value of $24.6m. It was reported in February that the company plans to expand it with an investment of U.S. $ 2.5 billion.

PETROPRENEURS FROM TRISAKTI UNIVERSITY

In every society the student community is the almost advanced layer – the proof of it is visible every day. Oil & Gas business is no exception. This is my conclusion after attending the final seminar of OIL EXPO 2013 at Jakarta’s Trisakti University.

TRISAKTI UNIVERSITY is a private Jakarta-based university established in 1965, and among other success stories, is well known in Oil & Gas industry. As an example, here is the report of “Badan Afiliasi Teknologi Mineral” (BATM). The faculty and scientists provide considerable input in industry development – another example – a recent report by Agus Guntoro Opportunities And Challenges For Unconventional Projects In Indonesia – which in details describe the subject. That is why traditionally, 2013 OIL EXPO was a good instrument to update both students and faculty on latest developments – with authoritative presenters.

I have to note that overall the organization and management was at a reasonably high level (of course, there were some small glitches). Small details were noticeable: before the seminar a short video was demonstrated that showed all preparations; all the personnel wore shirts and dresses of a special batik of a very nice pattern

The conclusive seminar of OIL EXPO - had a very intriguing name : PETROPRENEURS, and was moderated by Maman Abdurrahman, Business Development Manager of PT Luas Birus Utama, a chemical company that works on Oil & Gas; with participation of Rosa Richir, CEO of PT Petrosa Global Energy and  Andhika Anindyaguna, president Director and CEO of  Sugih Energy – one of the most dynamic Indonesian companies in industry.

The audience was usual student-type – some of them were relaxing from horrible Jakarta’s morning traffic, some playing games, but most of them were really attentive and listened to moderator and panelists, asking questions.
These young students probably do not realize that they are blessed with great opportunities:

  • to be a part of one of the most successful developing economies of the world;
  • a chance to participate in sweeping changes that are happening in industry (with urgent need of implementation of new technologies to increase production, upgrade the country’s capabilities in downstream); and of course,
  • to be the students of advanced educational institution.

Of course, one of the most discussed topics was:  how to make business for young in the industry. Mr. Andhika Anindyaguna shared his views and talked about opportunities in current picture of Indonesian Oil & Gas. In particular, the issue of prospecting in East Indonesia was discussed. Ms Rosa Richir stressed that to be successful, one need to be focused on particular subject – not dispersed on too many attractive (as it seems) issues. She also shared her experience as the leader of the first Indonesian company that revived abandoned oil well with OTOBAIL technology.

A good Q&A session finalized by receiving some memorable plaques

And the final photo

After attending the final ceremony, we visited one of the key persons in Indonesian energy business Dr. Ir. Rachmat Sudibjo, who held positions of Director General of Oil and Gas in Ministry of Energy, and Chairman of BPMIGAS.

Ms Rosa Richir discussed with his the necessity of introduction of advanced upstream technologies as well as the plans to cooperate jointly with the University in promotion in Indonesia of some recent  ones.
